FRANKIE THE FIREBIRD
The National Museum of Dance
Saratoga Springs, New York
Permanent Installation
The Firebird is a ballet by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company with choreography by Michel Fokine. The ballet is based on Russian folk tales of a magical glowing bird that can be both a blessing and a curse to its owner. Frankie is my interpretation of the famous ballet and the ballerinas who danced the tale. She stands 7 feet tall fully on pointe and boasts a wingspan of 5 feet. She is created out of hundreds of hand-cut paper feathers and embellished with Swarovski crystals and costume estate jewelry. If you listen closely you can still hear the whispers of the performances of Dame Margot Fonteyn and Maria Tallchief.
Nicole’s work is absolutely stunning! A perfect combination of art and creativity. We are so thankful to be able to have one of her lovely works, Frankie, on display here at the National Museum of Dance!
